FAQ - Bachelor's and Master's Study

If you have questions unanswered by the FAQ please feel free to call, mail or to visit us. Our contact data is located on the right hand side of this page.
Here (opens in new tab) you can find short directions.

Bachelors

Every examinee has the right to view the examination scripts; this right is regulated by the APB (§ 29 Para. 2 APB).

The guidelines about duration, place and procedure can be found here.

The examination management team at the MechCenter is responsible for the recognition of the pre-study internship.

The Mechanical Engineering Learning Center maintains a collection of companies where students have already completed the basic internship:

Further tips for finding internships can be foundhere (opens in new tab)

The documents required for recognition are listed on the MechCenter pages. The completed internship report, the qualifying reference and the application for recognition must be submitted to the MechCenter as a PDF.

With a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at the TU Darmstadt you receive even if you interrupt your studies a professional admission for the Master at the TU Darmstadt. A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering gives you access to the Master's in Mechanical Engineering and Master's in Aerospace Engineering (with proof of appropriate English language skills). With the Bachelor's degree in Bio-Materials Engineering, direct access to the Master's degree in Bio-Materials Engineering (with proof of appropriate English language skills, start: winter semester 26/27).

For other transfer options, please contact the MechCenter. If you have exmatriculated in the meantime, you must apply to Student Services as an external person (please note: deadlines must be considered!). Participation in the entrance examination is NOT required.

In order to receive the bachelor's diploma, all the achievements required for the bachelor's degree must have been received by the MechCenter. On the one hand, there are the exam performances and, on the other hand, the grade awarded for the thesis by the institute where the bachelor thesis was written. After the institute has forwarded the grade to the MechCenter, it takes about 2 months until the MechCenter sends an e-mail request to pick up the certificate. If the certificate cannot be picked up personally, a power of attorney from a third person is sufficient or, if desired, a postal delivery (not recommended) is possible.

With the new regulations (PO 2021), the completion of the 6-week basic internship is mandatory by the end of the second semester! If the internship is not approved by then, no applications for lectures or exams can be made. More information about the internship is available on the corresponding MechCenter website.

You can also find acurrent internship reuglations (under internship, 2021 is the most recent). This contains all the information on work to over and formalities that must be upheld.

You can find a list of companies where other students have already completed internships on the learning center website. This list is compiled by us from student feedback and should only server as an example. The opportunities for internships are huge.Don't forget that a protocol has to be written, submitted and approved before the end of the second semester!

If the internship is not recognized by the end of the second semester, you will be blocked from TUCaN and it will not be possible to continue your regular studies until further notice. The TUCaN ban will only be lifted once proof of the internship has been submitted to the examination management at the MechCenter.

More information about the internship is available on the corresponding MechCenter website.

Nobody is left alone at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Depending on the problem at hand, there are various contact points – both at the department and at the university: the student council's consultation hours and the MechCenter's student advisory service. The professorial mentor is another point of contact. If we cannot help with the problem ourselves, we certainly know the right place to go.

Within the university, there are other offices such as the central student advisory service, the anti-discrimination office or the psychotherapeutic counselling centre of the Studierendenwerk.

Yes, you can bring forward up to 30 CP from the master's area. It doesn't matter which subjects you have tested. Please note: The modules must be registered in TUCaN as “Master credits taken in advance” so that they can also be included in the master's degree.

Masters

Every examinee has the right to view the examination scripts; this right is regulated by the APB (§ 29 Para. 2 APB).

The guidelines about duration, place and procedure can be found here.

Extensive information on exchange and double degree programmes in the Department of Mechanical Engineering can be found at the MechCenter.

The university groups AIESEC and IAESTE organise internships abroad. There are also many opportunities outside the university.

For many tutorials and ADPs, it is useful to have attended the relevant lectures, but this is not usually compulsory. Possible prerequisites are specified by the department offering the course in the assignment or on the department's website under Studies -> Courses -> Tutorials.

The aptitude test for our Master's degree programme in Mechanical Engineering is based on the fundamentals of the courses in our Bachelor's degree programme. It is a written examination lasting 120 minutes and tests knowledge of the following subjects:

  • Technical Mechanics
  • Thermodynamics as well as heat and mass transfer
  • Machine elements and mechatronics
  • System theory and control engineering
  • Measurement technology, sensors and statistics
  • Numerical calculation methods
  • Technical fluid mechanics

The exam is offered as an online exam via Moodle.

The level of difficulty of the tasks is based on the respective exercises or, in some cases, on the exams, whereby the focus is on understanding and not on ‘combat maths’.

Of course, the tasks are adapted to the scope of the exam and can be solved with preparation. However, the exam should not be underestimated, as you as an applicant should prove whether you have a level comparable to our Bachelor's graduates. To prepare for the exam, we can highly recommend a visit to our learning centre, as scripts as well as old exams and exam transcripts of the Bachelor's exams are available there. There is an old exam of the aptitude test to illustrate the level.

A detailed description of the admission requirements and the examination can also be found in §17a of the study regulations for the Master's degree programme (under Examination Regulations 2021).

In the Master's degree programme in Mechanical Engineering, admission is permitted subject to conditions in accordance with §17a of the study regulations (opens in new tab). However, the total amount of work to be completed by catching up must not exceed 30CP. The deadline by which the conditional subjects must be completed is stated on the letter of admission. As a rule, this is three semesters. However, the possibility of the supplementary oral examination according to §31 and §32 of the APB does not apply to the required subjects.

In the Master's degree programme in Aerospace Engineering, the requirements are currently only given as a recommendation.

You can register for events in advance, but this is also shown and carried out as part of the orientation programme for new, external Master's students. At the kick-off of the start programmes and the subsequent mentoring programme, many important points about studying are discussed – participation is therefore highly recommended and possible online.

There are also FAQs and video tutorials on TUCaN, which can help with many questions.

As there are no compulsory courses in the Master's programme and you have to pay attention to the overlaps between subjects, we publish a timetable for Master's students every semester on the student council website.

Re-registration for the Master's programme is only possible via ONLINE application! Be sure to observe the deadlines for submitting applications! More information on the university website

Application deadlines for the application for admission to the Master's programme:

  • for the summer semester: from 01.12. to 15.01.(following year)
  • for the winter semester: from 01.06. to 15.07.

An application for conditional enrolment in the Master's programme is possible if at least 160 CP have been completed by the deadline. These deadlines are

  • for the summer semester: 30.04.
  • for the winter semester: 31.10.

For many tutorials and ADPs it makes sense to have attended the corresponding lectures, but it is not mandatory.
